Preparatory German language course

The Language Learning Institute (SLI) offers courses in German as a foreign language from beginner’s level (A1) to advanced level (C1). This includes the preparation for the German Language Test for University Admission (DSH). The courses are designed for prospective exchange students (e.g. ERASMUS students) and international students who have not yet started their studies at a German university or university of applied sciences, but gained admission to a degree course at the University of Wuppertal.

Preparatory German language course

The preparatory German language courses are open to students admitted to the course, guest lecturers, and exchange students.

 

Primarily, the courses are designed to prepare students to pass the German Language Test for University Admission (DSH). With passing each course, a certificate will be issued indicating the level of language proficiency acquired.

You can complete courses from beginner’s level (A1) to advanced level (C1). 

Each semester, students participate in two intensive courses lasting for 8 weeks each followed by the final examinations. The courses comprise 20 hours per week per semester each. They usually take place in the morning (8:00 a.m. -12:00 a.m.). Supplementary courses at level C1 are offered in the afternoons.

The Language Learning Institute (SLI) offers supplementary courses for revision and consolidation and the DSH lecture for level C1. The Consumer Association of North Rhine-Westphalia (Verbraucherzentrale Nordrhein-Westfalen) offers different courses on the topic “Life in Germany” at level B1.

International students who would like to commence their studies: Please apply via the application page of uni-assist. Visiting lecturers and exchange students are asked to send an email to the Language Learning Institute (SLI).

After the successful completion of the German course at level C1, you can take the DSH examination, which is offered four times a year at the SLI (in January, March, June and September).

If you would like to take the DSH in March or June, but do not participate in a German course at the Language Learning Institute, you need the admission letter for your degree course at the University of Wuppertal as well as a certificate confirming level C1.

Please note that the DSH examination at the University of Wuppertal can only be taken three times.

Regular students admitted to a degree course at the University of Wuppertal have to pay 500 euros per semester. Exchange students have to pay 300 euros.

Yes, you can gain 10 credit points for each course level you completed successfully.
