What are the entrance requirements to register for a language course that is then used for the “Optionalbereich”?

At first, the online placement test is obligatory for all students who would like to participate in a language course (English, Spanish, Italian and French). The placement test is used to determine the appropriate level of language courses. If a student has previous knowledge in any of the other languages that are not mentioned, please contact the office in order to have a short talk with one of the language instructures about which course is the most suitable. Students are not allowed to participate in courses that are below the determined level of language courses. This is to ensure a homogenous group and course structure as well as to ensure that students perform according to present knowledge. If data is consciously forged during the placement test or during the registration for the course, a deprivation of acquired credit points can occur retrospectively!

Which of the successfully completed language courses of the Language Learning Institute can be used for the “Optionalbereich”?

It is only possible to use successfully completed language courses that correspond to the, with the help of the placement test/ talk, determined level of knowledge of the student. If language courses were completed that are below the determined level of knowledge, it might happen that the examination office refuses to acknowledge or deprive students retrospectively of the successful completion of the courses. The same applies to students who have participated in a language course of the Language Learning Institute that is identical to his or her field of study.

When does a language course of the Language Learning Institute is successfully completed?

A language course is effectively and successfully completed if the student:

- has passed the final exam/ test of the course at least with a 4,0

- has done an additional task in form of a presentation or submitted homework

- has participated regularly and actively, i.e. the student is only allowed to miss not more than ¼ of the lessons (late arrival and early leave also count here).

- It is insignificant whether these absences are excused or not. Furthermore, the student should actively participate as the oral grade counts at least for 1/3 of the final grade.

Can I take the final exam later?

It is possible to take the final exam at a later date if the student can present a doctor’s certificate or another valid reason (e.g. an attestation signed by a professor or teacher that at the same time as the final exam another exam had been taken). In such a case the certificate or attestation is to present at the office of the Language Learning Institute.

Where, when and how do I get my certificate after I have successfully completed a course at the Language Learning Institute?

Certificates can be picked up at the office of the Language Learning Institute (S.09.06) about four weeks after the final exam had taken place. Furthermore, students will receive an e-mail as soon as the certificates are ready to be picked up.

How many language courses do I have to take when I choose the field of competence “foreign and technical languages” for the “Optionalbereich”?
